When planning out one’s dream backyard, the preferred process of providing natural gas or propane to certain outdoor appliances isn’t exactly top of the list of concerns for homeowners. However, the plumber or HVAC contractor would beg to differ. Recognized as the after-the-meter/backyard plumbing market, common applications include anything from pool heaters and hot tubs to fire pits and outdoor kitchens. In order to properly operate, these fixtures typically require line pressures of 7” of water column to 2 PSI for natural gas and 10-12 PSI for propane. The safe and efficient way in which natural gas or propane is fed to outdoor appliances is through the use of a riser. A riser is known as a method of transitioning a below grade gas carrying polyethylene (PE) line to an above grade location while also transitioning the PE to a steel system (above grade). The PE must carry the gas to a termination point above ground. There are two types of natural gas/propane risers and this would include the anodeless style and anode style. The anodeless riser style is defined as a method of transitioning from below grade to above grade with polyethylene (PE). The anode riser style is a method that transitions polyethylene (PE) to steel below grade while requiring the steel to carry gas.
